Reading at Fenstanton and Hilton Primary School
At Fenstanton and Hilton Primary School, we are committed to nurturing confident and enthusiastic readers through our comprehensive approach to reading. Using the Little Wandle Revised Letters and Sounds phonics scheme, we build strong foundational reading skills from the start. This is complemented by the Accelerated Reader program, which encourages independent reading and helps pupils develop comprehension skills through tailored book recommendations and progress tracking. Together, these programs ensure every child has the tools to succeed and develop a lifelong love of reading.
Reading is very complex skill for children to learn and the complexity is modelled by the Scarborough Reading Rope, which illustrates the interconnected skilled required for successful reading. The model highlights two main strands: word recognition and language comprehension. Word recognition involves skills like phonological awareness, decoding, and sight recognition, while language comprehension includes background knowledge, vocabulary, language structures, and verbal reasoning. As these strands intertwine, they create a strong, resilient "rope" that supports fluent, skilled reading. By understanding and nurturing each component, we can better support students' literacy development, ensuring they become confident and capable readers.
