Science at Fenstanton and Hilton Primary School
INTENT
By the end of year 6 we want all of our children to be critical thinkers, creative and imaginative. We want them to know how to question what they see; know that science changes over time; to be able to articulate their thoughts and be able to represent data in a variety of ways.
We intend to…
- Ensure disciplinary and substantive knowledge is mapped logically through our two year cycle.
- Ensure that we have a variety of non-fiction texts that link to scientific topics.
- Ensure we extend the Science rich vocabulary that the children already have coming into the school.
- Develop links with local science research facilities.
- Ensure all children are resilient learners and given the opportunity to explore and investigate.
- Ensure that teachers use adaptive teaching to ensure all children are engaged and making progress.
IMPLEMENTATION
At Fenstanton and Hilton Primary school we ensure that the curriculum is carried out across the school by:
- Outlining the key learning for each half term; including key vocabulary.
- Creating flash back quizzes for each lesson which helps the children recall knowledge from previous lessons and years.
- Planning trips and visits which coincide or consolidate with our science learning.
- Planning regular outdoor learning opportunities.
- Enhancing our curriculum especially for the most disadvantaged by organising guest speakers, organising Science week which focuses on the wider world and promotes careers in science.
